Various organisations take care of nature conservation and environmental protection in the Altmark
Education and preservation
Education and appreciation is given top priority from an early age. NABU and other organisations are successfully working to protect the native flora and fauna.
For years, no topic has dominated and polarised the media as much as climate and nature conservation. Numerous organisations have been established here to preserve the value of the Altmark region. Special events and entire school trips are dedicated to environmental education and information. Young people’s awareness is raised and attention is drawn to the world’s problems, and particularly to the Altmark’s unique ecosystems, at various centres. There are tours to the region’s wildlife and animals returning home are welcome. Parents are amazed at the richness of species that did not exist in their time. Successes are certainly apparent: the famous "BIG FIVE" (beaver, otter, stork, crane and eagle) are after all a permanent feature of the beautiful Elbe landscape in the east of the Altmark again.
Environmental organisations acquire fallow open spaces in order to give nature back what was once taken from it. Thanks to year-round outdoor breeding species and the associated wildlife, our own ecosystem has been successfully revived and more biodiversity has been provided for almost by chance. Young discoverers will get their money's worth at the NABU Centre in Buch, for example. Examining with a magnifying glass, touching, digging, spying wild animals through binoculars or letting off steam in the nature playground – this is the right place for anyone who is curious.
