Trades – a business where tradition and innovations are practised equally. An industry with innovators. Trades play an important part in the Altmark regional economy.

Almost 600 guild enterprises are organised under the umbrella of the Kreishandwerkerschaft Altmark association. With a high number of employees the guild enterprises are a crucial branch of industry in the Altmark. The district trades association represents the interests of the Altmark’s trades to politics, administration and trade unions.

Contrary to the general trend with a mixed economic situation, the trades are doing well in the Altmark: many businesses are working at very good or even full capacity, the order books are packed. The recruitment of young staff is therefore a priority for businesses in the trades. Too many school leavers strive for a university degree, but as good skilled workers in the trade they can earn far more than some university graduates and, with the appropriate skills, even continue the business later on.
