In addition to a business landscape characterised by small and medium-sized enterprises, the Altmark region is also able to hold its own in international competition. Altmark companies have established themselves in the global economy in their sectors and with their products through entrepreneurial spirit, innovation and quality, thus making a decisive contribution to the good image and strengthening the Altmark as a business location.
Some of the well-known, globally operating companies are... for example, Mercer Stendal's pulp mill, a world-leading manufacturer of Kraft pulp, MPA Pharma in Osterburg has market-leading expertise as a pharmaceutical manufacturer in the field of re- and parallel imports, and Zorn Instruments GmbH in Stendal is one of just a few manufacturers of high-precision measuring and testing equipment worldwide. Other important players from the Altmark district of Salzwedel are Carl Bechem GmbH in Mieste, NTN Antriebstechnik GmbH in Gardelegen and DEBA Badsysteme GmbH in Salzwedel. Leading players from the food industry include Elb-Milch in Stendal and the muesli manufacturer DE-VAU-GE from Tangermünde. But suppliers of specialities from the Altmark region also enjoy national, partly international appeal, including Salzwedeler Baumkuchen GmbH and Erste Salzwedeler Baumkuchenfabrik as well as Konditorei Stehwien from Tangermünde.

The Altmark is economically mainly an agricultural and trades region. However, companies that want to settle here will find plenty of industrial space.
One of the most famous industrial areas in the Altmark is the industrial park near Arneburg. The pulp mill and a fine paper mill are located here, which are important employers in the region. In addition to other companies, lots of vacant industrial space and warehouses can be found here. As a company looking for a suitable location, you will find plenty of space here and benefit from the good connections: there is a direct rail link to Stendal, Magdeburg and Wittenberge and the industrial area has its own port. The B188 and B189 main roads are not far away and the construction of the A14 motorway will make the location even more attractive.
Companies can also find suitable industrial estates in other towns such as Stendal, Salzwedel, Tangermünde, Osterburg and Gardelegen. You will find the Nord I and II industrial areas and the large Nord commercial area in Gardelegen, on the northernmost edge of the city. These are directly linked to the B71 and B188 bypasses. The Ost II commercial estate is also on the B188. Gardelegen is an ideal location for the supply industry due to its proximity to the car manufacturer Volkswagen. The Hanseatic town of Osterburg (Altmark) has two commercial/industrial areas located in the south of the city, which are directly linked to the B189 and future A14.

Altmarkkreis Salzwedel district
Freeway and broadband expansion for an attractive infrastructure
The Altmark has very good rail connections - including direct connections from Berlin via Stendal, Salzwedel, Uelzen, Lüneburg to Hamburg, but also to the south of Germany. By water, the Altmark is navigable via the Elbe and Havel waterways; important hubs here are the Elbe inland port in Tangermünde and the river port at the Altmark Industrial and Commercial Park in Arneburg. The Altmark can also be reached by air via the Stendal-Borstel airfield.
The Hanseatic city of Stendal in Old Mark Brandenburg is in a particularly ideal location: with its ICE train connection, it is one of the most important rail transportation hubs in northern Germany: it takes 46 minutes to get from Stendal to Berlin's main train station, and 1 hour to Hanover. Wolfsburg can also be reached by train from Stendal and Gardelegen in about 30 minutes each.

Broadband expansion
The Altmark is centrally and conveniently located within Germany and Europe: right between the major cities of Berlin, Hamburg, Hanover, Wolfsburg and Magdeburg, the Leipzig-Halle region is not far away either. The Hanseatic city of Stendal in the Altmark region is particularly well located: with an ICE train connection, it is one of the most important rail transport hubs in Northern Germany and the Stendal/Borstel commercial airfield is available for business flights.
The Altmark can be easily reached by water via the Elbe’s inland port in Tangermünde and the river port at the Altmark industrial and commercial park in Arneburg. Very soon the A14 motorway will lead through the Altmark region, making the region even more interesting as a business location. The broadband expansion is also running full speed ahead to ensure good and fast Internet connections in the last small villages in the Altmark’s rural area. In addition, the expansion of broadband also enables many sole traders and self-employed people to work here regardless of their location.
Due to the successful development of the planning steps in the individual project areas, the Europe-wide awards of the first three construction phases were successfully published at the end of March 2020 and the first construction projects were started.
