As a member of your town's volunteer fire brigade you are part of a strong community. Because for many Altmarkers their fire brigade is much more than just a hobby. As there is no professional fire brigade in the Altmark, the volunteer fire brigades are all the more important. Not only in the event of fire but also in the case of floods and accidents, firefighters are indispensable helpers. This is precisely why many Altmarkers are keen to get involved with the fire brigade. Even if you don't want to be part of the fire-fighting team, you can get involved in many ways.
For many people, being involved with the fire brigade means more than "just" helping to extinguish fires and rescue people from a burning building. The community is just as important to the firemen and firewomen. In many of the Altmark's small villages, the volunteer fire brigade is the most important association and organises parties or joint activities. And the youth fire brigade is a contact point for many children and adolescents, where they experience a sense of community and are physically challenged.
