Perfect connections: fast train travel to Germany's major cities

Working in Berlin and living in Stendal – this is possible for many Altmarkers thanks to the region's good train connections. The two Hanseatic towns of Salzwedel and Stendal were already important transport hubs in the past.

Do you work in the big city but would rather live in the countryside? Then the Altmark is perfect for you. A combination of country life in your own home and working in the city is perfectly feasible here. Many of the towns in the Altmark region lie along railway lines. You can reach Berlin from Stendal by train in just 40 minutes, and Hamburg can be reached from Salzwedel within 2 hours. The east-west connection between Berlin and Hanover is also an important and highly frequented route, which is often used by commuters to Wolfsburg. The railway lines are closely linked to the local transport providers PVGS Salzwedel and Stendalbus, so you can get around quickly.

In the past, a kilometre-long railway network stretched through the whole of the Altmark and led to tourist places of interest such as Arendsee, which can only be reached by bus today. However, the old railway lines might soon be revived, and interest groups such as the Railway Customers Association are campaigning for this. Volunteers are repairing the tracks. Perhaps trains will soon be rolling over the old tracks again, so more people can travel fast and in an environmentally friendly way and let their gaze wander over deer, forests and meadows.
