Experience history, culture, unique nature and much more right here on your own doorstep. Are you fascinated by architecture? Then there is a lot to discover in our region, because you will find beautiful brick buildings and churches everywhere in the Hanseatic towns and smaller towns in the Altmark, like the oldest Romanesque brick monastery in Northern Germany in Jerichow or several Northern German brick Gothic gems, like Tangermünde town hall or the Uenglinger Tor in Stendal, which is one of the most beautiful of its kind besides Lübeck's Holstentor. The two old Hanseatic towns are also part of the European Route of Brick Gothic. You can still discover chic, cute little half-timbered houses all over the Altmark, the Hanseatic town of Salzwedel is even part of the German Half-Timbered House Road.
Explore the region in the footsteps of important historical figures such as the first German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, Johann Friedrich Danneil or Joachim Winckelmann. Even emperors and kings once resided in the small town of Tangermünde in the Altmark region. You can visit the animals with your children at numerous zoos, such as Stendal, Tangerhütte and Klötze. One great destination is also the fairy tale park in Salzwedel, which will not only inspire your children but you too.
The Altmark's unique nature is also waiting to be discovered and invites you to enjoy all kinds of activities. Highlights are Naturpark Drömling nature park and the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve. Along the Elbe you will find stork villages like Wahrenberg and Rühstädt, which you should definitely visit in spring. Then you can watch the storks rattling and breeding on church roofs, chimneys and other buildings.
