Although it is largely flat, the Altmark is characterised by a large number of striking, but above all natural landscapes. These include the Elbe floodplains with the UNESCO Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, the Havel lowlands with the Elbe-Havel-Winkel, the Naturpark Drömling, the Altmärkische Wische, the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heide or the Kalbesche Werder. There are numerous nature trails integrated into these landscapes, some of which are nature reserves.
Of the many nature experience areas in the Altmark, the Naturpark Drömling, the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve, the Special Protection Area for birds at Kalbe/Milde, the Arendsee and the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heath are of great importance. You will find one of the least populated areas in the Colbitz-Letzlinger Heath. It is home to numerous rare and endangered species of animals and is made up of ancient forests (including the largest linden forest in Europe), moors and heathland. The Arendsee offers habitat for water birds and is a popular wintering ground for greylag geese.
